This is what the Lord says: “Bad things will happen to those who put their trust in people. Bad things will happen to those who depend on human strength. That is because they have stopped trusting the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:5 ERV)
God is greater than our hearts. He knows everything. (1 John 3:20 ERV)
Do you know when we can’t let a guy go because of the intense feelings we have for him—even when we know God’s Word commands us not to be with an unbeliever—we have stopped trusting God, and are now instead trusting that guy and our heart, although God is infinitely greater than both.
We have broken the very first commandment:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)
Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will obey Me.”
If we do not obey Jesus, we do not truly love Him. When we cannot let go of this guy who can’t save us from hell, but will help send us there, we have broken yet another commandment:
“You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you (for the Lord your God is a jealous God among you), lest the anger of the Lord your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.”(Deuteronomy 6:14, 15)
You have now let your heart, of which Jeremiah says is deceitful and wicked above all else, be your god, and this guy is also your god. You are trusting him to satisfy your deepest longings and fulfill your every need. You want love, but you have no idea that true love is found only in Christ Himself, who is love.
What you and that guy have is not love. It’s infatuation, or it’s lust, but it most certainly is not love.
Love is laying your life down for another. You may love him (if you still have Christ in you), because you’re literally giving your life to him since you are disobeying Christ and endangering your soul to hell for him, but since he isn’t born again by the Holy Spirit, he cannot possibly love you unconditionally, supernaturally, as a man of Christ can.
I pray you would lean on God’s understanding and stop leaning on your own. Can’t you see how illogical your heart is? Your mind knows your relationship is not right before God and you are under His wrath since you’re in rebellion against Him, but yet your heart denies it and clings to that guy like a parasite.
It’s deceitful. It is wicked. I greatly discourage you from following and trusting it any longer. Because after a while, something terrifying happens:
God shows his anger from heaven against all the evil and wrong things that people do. Their evil lives hide the truth they have. This makes God angry because they have been shown what he is like. Yes, God has made it clear to them. Instead of honoring the divine greatness of God, who lives forever, they traded it for the worship of idols—things made to look like humans, who get sick and die, or like birds, animals, and snakes. People wanted only to do evil. So God left them and let them go their sinful way. And so they became completely immoral and used their bodies in shameful ways with each other. They traded the truth of God for a lie. They bowed down and worshiped the things God made instead of worshiping the God who made those things. He is the one who should be praised forever. Amen. Because people did those things, God left them and let them do the shameful things they wanted to do. (Romans 1:18, 19, 23-26 ERV)
Your deceitful heart will tell you: if you obey God, you won’t be happy. But I can tell you from personal experience, since I too had to let go of a guy I couldn’t see myself without, and then again with a Christian guy, that when you honor God, He honors and blesses you, and makes good on this promise:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (I Corinthians 2:9)
