“Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it.” (Mark 8:34, 35)
If this is the case one would conclude that there is no such thing as, “saved but not surrendered.” For Jesus said we /must/ deny ourself, take up our cross and follow Him. And that those who /lose/ their life for Him will save it. So why do some believe you can be “saved”, but still do your own thing; what you want, still try to lead your life and only follow Christ on Sundays when you’re at church for an hour and a half? That doesn’t seem like a losing of one’s life, but rather a clinging to one’s life, one’s plans and wills, and doing outward religious routine to almost put up a partial show for God so that you deceive yourself into thinking you and Him are cool since you made it to church.
Jesus said in another place:
“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters–[yes] and even his own life also–he cannot be My disciple. So then, any of you who does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to, give up, say good-bye to) all that he has cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. “For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him, saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ “Or what king, going to war against another king, will not first sit down and decide if he is able with 10,000 to oppose the one who comes against him with 20,000? If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So then, any of you who does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to, give up, say good-bye to) all that he has cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14:26-33)
If this is the standard, we all have to self-examine and ask ourselves, am I really saved?
