If there’s a God, why does He let bad things happen to good people?

You know people say, if there’s a God, why does He let all these terrible things happen? Or if God is good, why does He allow bad things to happen to good people? What people don’t realize is they’re really saying, “Why doesn’t God control people’s actions?”

And that answer is clear: because He is just, He gives EVERYONE free will and that includes the free will to do evil acts.

Now if He decided to stop all evil, guess what, me and you wouldn’t be here. Because we may not all be murderers in the physical sense, but Jesus says if you hate you’ve commited murder. Lying is evil, stealing is evil, jealousy and envy is evil. Greed is evil. All of these things we do, sometimes without even thinking twice about them. The Bible says there is no one that does good no, not one. Jesus Himself rhetorically asked a young man that called Him good, “Why do you call me good? There is one who is good: God.” The very fact that we’re pointing the finger at a just and holy God shows we’re wrong and have evil and rebellion in our hearts.

We want nothing to do with God yet we want Him to do everything we want and get angry at Him when things don’t turn out the way we wanted them to. We blame everything on Him, as though Satan doesn’t exist and people’s own actions don’t have consequences. We want Him to come to us on our terms rather than the other way around. We think He has this set of rules and we’d much rather enjoy our lives (the one He’s given us), for our own pleasures not knowing the guidelines and commands He has are to protect us from ourselves. People think they’re free when truly, they’re in bondage. Bondage to depression, bondage to alcohol, bondage to feelings of insignificance, sexual bondage, bondage to greed and money.

He wants to set us free from the things in this world we allow to entangle us. And what’s even more sad to me, is so many people judge the God of the Bible without ever picking it up and reading it themselves. They judge His actions, without reading the context and seeing His reasons. They judge His commands without reading them through and seeing how when applied, they truly work and are beneficial. They look at those who claim to be Christians yet hate and in turn hate God because of them, never knowing the Bible says, “If say you follow Christ yet hate your bother you are a liar.” And then if and when they do meet a true Christian who is loving and kind, instead of blaming God for the goodness inside of that person, they give the credit to the person like they’re simply able to love those who hate them and be kind to everyone in their own strength (because we as humans in our own strength are so good at loving everyone, no matter what they believe or what they do for a living or what political party they’re associated with).

If you’re reading this, whatever good you see even in me, I promise you as the Apostle Paul said, “It’s Christ’s love that compels me.” ‘Cause I can tell you right now, I didn’t love those who hated me before. Sure I’d “feel bad” for someone, but never go out of my way and make a real effort to help them simply because of compassion. I would curse up and down and if you gave me an attitude you’d get it right back. I’m not self-righteous. I know my heart all on its own is naturally inclined to evil desires. “Why do you say they’re evil Natasha?” Because before God, the root of all my desires, in the end, were for my own satisfaction. They were so “I could be happy.” So that “I could feel good.” So that “I could make money.” So that “I could be successful.” They were all about me. They were all selfish. And for those of you who do think you’re a good person, really reflect and evaluate the desires of your heart’s. What are they and who do they benefit most?

God is love. We as humans can’t comprehend that because by ourselves, we do not know what true love looks like. In this world, without God, love is broken and tainted and it ends up hurting people. Look at the women on The Bachelor. They all “love” that man, but 24 of them leave heart-broken. So many people get married because they’re, “in love,” but how many of those people get divorced? On our own, we are completely clueless. We get messed up over and over again. It’s because true love is found in God and only He can shed some light on what it’s supposed to look like. Don’t believe me?

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;   does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;   does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;   bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”-1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

Point out a person for me who claims to be athiest or does not know or believe in the God of the Bible with that kind of love. Only God has this kind of love and I’m not saying Christians are perfect, but when you meet a Christian that doesn’t just say they have Jesus, but truly does, they have something close to this kind of love. Some of us more than others but simply because they’ve been walking with Jesus longer and as the Bible claims we are new creatures in Him transforming from day to day more and more into His image and glory.

Christianity is the opposite of self-righteousness. We blame everything that’s good in us on Christ, not ourselves.

We know that we’re not good enough for heaven. We know it’s only because of Jesus that we have even the right to be called God’s child.

We know that we will still fail and sin, but since we have been eternally forgiven, we can stand in God’s presence and ask for forgiveness and the strength to keep going.

If you hate Jesus, it’s because you don’t know Him yet.

If you hate Christianity, it’s because you really don’t know what it’s all about.

I pray this sheds some light and helps you understand the heart of a Christian.

God bless.

    Well said Hun.
That’s exactly what people need to understand.
I stopped questioning God a long time ago because
I know that he isn’t in control of the horrible choices that
people make in this world! Some people just don’t seem
to get that. Very glad you touched on this topic:)
